So, I had a thought the other day. Yes I know, buckle up.
I am rather new to blogging and I follow a few people but tend to be rather picky on who I click “Follow” on. One of the things I noticed on the control panel is that I can’t find anywhere that lists who is following me and I wondered if anyone has “Unfollowed” me and my neurotic mind went to the why of that if they did. We get notice emails when we are followed by someone, but not when the unfollow or is it that nobody has deleted me yet so I haven’t had that email? My ego (or lack there of) says no, I’m sure some have twinged or fallen asleep at a post or two and viciously scrapped me.
Did anything I post offend them? Do they just not find me interesting anymore? Has anyone unfollowed me that I still follow?
Then I thought, well actually there is someone that I would consider unfollowing but haven’t yet for two reasons:
- I am a bit of a masochist and invite torture into my life to some extent. I can be twisted enough to continue reading someone’s blog who really irritates me and sit there chastising them in my head. For some reason I find this fun and amusing sometimes. Like the train wreck you can’t look away from.
- In all of my directness, I still don’t want to be rude and unfollowing somehow seems rude to me.
Now that I have you wondering if your blog is the one I want to unfollow I will say, it probably isn’t you. Likely, it is someone who isn’t reading mine so rest assured. =P
Is it rude to unfollow? Is there etiquette for it? Am I supposed to write some kind of reason out to the person stating why I find them uninteresting or whatever? Or do I just slink away and hope they never realize I left them?
If I click the unfollow button I will do so with savagery and malicious intent…maybe.
Life Notes 
I’m new to blogging myself, and honestly, to me, I see it as: Why follow a blog that really has no interest to you? I don’t find that rude, to me, that’s doing someone a favor. I wouldn’t really enjoy having tons of people following me that really don’t read what I write. I would rather have a few who do. But, that’s just me. I think it’s different for everyone.
A second thought. Just because someone follows you, I don’t see that you should have to follow them. If they like your blog, that’s great, but, that doesn’t mean you are going to like theirs. Just, like I said, that’s just my take on it.
I agree on this, I definitely don’t follow everyone who follows me. Some I think do it for their own advertising, if you know what I mean. Plus, I just don’t have the attention span to follow tons of people, I can’t focus that much on blogging every day.
You can see who’s following you by clicking on site stats, then scroll down to “Totals, followers and shares, then click “blog” under “followers”. I don’t think you get a notice if someone unfollows you–I’ve got a lot of followers, but the number doesn’t gibe AT ALL with the number of actual views, so maybe I’ve been ditched and just don’t know it.
And I agree with navyxwife. If someone “Likes” me, I’ll check out their blog, but most of the time I end up ignoring them. Some are promoting themselves, some are auto-likes, and some are just of no interest to me. And that’s OK.
